IV Sedation for Total Treatment Relaxation
We strive to deliver painless injections, but some patients are naturally anxious. If this sounds like you, we offer several sedation options that may make your visit much more relaxing. The first is intravenous (IV) sedation. We call this method “twilight” sedation, and it will ensure a comfortable dental visit with no pain or nervousness. You won’t be aware of the treatment being done. Using this method, we can often complete your treatment in just one visit.
We also offer nitrous oxide sedation, known as “laughing gas.” This sedation is inhaled through a mask that allows you to breathe in the medication and induces a state of relaxation. Local anesthetic will be administered in conjunction with nitrous oxide to eliminate pain in most cases. We work to make you feel comfortably relaxed throughout your dental treatment.

Engineering Straighter Teeth with Traditional Orthodontics
Traditional orthodontics typically involve the use of metal or possibly ceramic braces. Steady, gentle pressure in the direction of desired change will reposition teeth over time. Here’s how they work: Stainless steel, titanium, or ceramic brackets are bonded to the teeth. A thin metal wire known as an archwire connects to each bracket. Using tension, the archwire places pressure on your teeth to move them into place. Colorful (or clear) elastic bands are stretched to hold the archwires to the brackets. As adjustments are necessary, archwires of various diameters are tensioned and ligature elastics are changed.
Conventional braces allow Dr. Skinner to exert more control over how your teeth are straightened. More complex corrections can be made using this technique. Because this type of braces can’t be easily removed and are constantly monitored, there is less risk of problems caused from failure to wear the proper aligner for the appropriate length of time. In general, braces are worn for two to two-and-a-half years. However, everyone requires a unique amount of correction and the time needed varies by patient.

Bill Skinner, DDS,
is pleased to be able to offer beautiful smiles to his neighbors in Urbandale and the surrounding communities.
Dr. Skinner attended Luther College for his undergraduate education and
was accepted early to the University of Iowa College of
Dentistry, where he obtained his dental degree. He then served an
externship at Broad Lawns Dental Clinic and worked as an associate
dentist before opening his own practice.
Since his graduation from dental school in 1997, Dr. Skinner has
engaged in extensive postgraduate education. This has encompassed a
broad range of topics, from orthodontics to dental implants and more.
He has obtained certifications in IV sedation, Invisalign™ clear
aligners, advanced rotary endodontics (root canal therapy), and
BioLase™ laser treatment. His commitment to lifelong education allows
him to provide his patients with the best results in the least invasive
manner with a high emphasis on comfort and ensures the highest
level of care, both today and tomorrow.
Dr. Skinner is also a very active participant in the community. He
volunteers with his church and works with Meals from the Heartland. He
is a volunteer with the Iowa Mission of Mercy and participates in an
annual day of free treatment for veterans and current military members.
Additionally, Dr. Skinner donates free dental care to the local needy
through Donated Dental Services and has participated in many mission
trips. He can also be found volunteering with numerous nonprofit
organizations.
Dr. Skinner and his wife Kelly have three beautiful daughters. He
enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, fishing, boating,
going to the gun range, and reading.
